Madison VA Celebrates LGBT Pride Day

La Crosse Mayor Vetoes Attempt to Decriminalize Possessing Some Marijuana

On Tuesday afternoon, June 14th the La Crosse Mayor, Matt Harter vetoed a measure passed by the La Crosse Common Council to decriminalize possessing up to 7 grams of marijuana.  The La Crosse Tribune reports the story here .  The Common Council will decide whether or not to consider overriding the mayor’s veto.  You may contact the La Crosse Common Council with your views at (608) 789-7510 or by sending an email to them at this link .

New Milwaukee County Exec Pushes Domestic Partner Benefits

Chris Abele, the new Milwaukee County Executive issued a press release  Monday that he would work with the County Board toward adopting an ordinance that would extend health care and other benefits to domestic partners of Milwaukee County employees. In 2009 Scott Walker issued a veto for measure to study the issue. According to this article , Abele said he would move ahead with the type of benefits package that Walker rejected.

West Bend School Board President Reverses Vote: Grants Approval to Gay Straight Alliance

West Bend School Board President Randy Marquardt reversed his earlier vote and granted approval for a Gay Straight Alliance to receive official recognition as a school-sponsored club.  The final vote for approval was 4-3.  According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article , Marquardt said he was “still opposed giving the group club status but said he did not believe a legal fight was in the district’s interest.”

West Bend School Board to Vote on Gay Straight Alliance

Tonight the West Bend School Board will be deciding whether or not to approve a Gay Straight Alliance Application for recognition as a school-sponsored club.  The Board had earlier defeated such a measure and it is coming back for a vote tonight. La Crosse Common Council Votes to De-criminalize Possessing Some Marijuana

Despite the growing evidence of the harmful effects of marijuana use, during the Thursday, June 9, 2011 La Crosse Common Council meeting, the Common Council voted 11-4 to de-criminalize first offenders who possessed up to 7 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia as a municipal offense rather than a criminal charge.  You can read the story here .

The issue now goes to Mayor Mathias Harter who will have to decide whether or not to veto this ordinance.  He has until 5:00pm Tuesday, June 14th to make his decision.
