Racine Committee Sets Public Hearing

The Finance & Personnel Committee of the Racine Common Council has now set a public hearing on the matter of domestic partner health insurance benefits to the domestic partners of Racine employees including the dependents of domestic partners.

The public hearing will be held Thursday, March 1st at 5:30pm in Room 205 of the Racine City Hall, 730 Washington Ave.  Contact numbers for the Committee members are on the previous post.

Racine Common Council Sends Domestic Partner Benefit Proposal Back to Committee

At the Wednesday, February 22nd Racine Common Council Meeting, the Finance & Personnel Committee recommended to the Council that the matter of domestic partner benefits for Racine employees be considered by the Committee of the Whole. The Council rejected this recommendation and sent it back to the Finance & Personnel Committee.

This now requires the Finance & Personnel Committee to conduct a public hearing on this matter and then offer a recommendation to the Council.

The Finance & Personnel Committee will be meeting Monday, February 27th at 5:00pm at the Racine City Hall.  Although the agenda for the meeting has not been set as of this writing, it is imperative for Racine residents to be in contact with members of this Committee to share your views.

Racine Committee Considers Domestic Partner Benefits – Public Hearing to be Set

The Finance & Personnel Committee of the Racine Common Council voted unanimously Monday night to refer the establishment of new domestic partner benefits to the Council’s Committee as a Whole along with a public hearing at a future meeting date (to be set).  Racine residents can express their views to their Alderman by using this link .

“Choose Life” License Plate Proposed for Wisconsin

Yesterday Senate Bill 449 was introduced to authorize Wisconsin to join a growing number of states to allow for the making of specialized license plates in the state to display the words “Choose Life”.  You may read the SB-449 here .  This Bill has been placed in the Committee on Transportation and Elections.  You may contact members of the Committee here  with your views.  You may also call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-362-9472.

Ashland City Council to Vote Valentine’s Day on Banning Prayer

Tuesday, February 14th, the Ashland City Council will be voting on a proposed ordinance which would ban prayer at the beginning of City Council Meetings and instead replacing it with a moment of silence.

This measure initially was tabled at their last meeting and is now to be taken up on Tuesday.  The Ashland Mayor and Council Members may be contacted here .

WI Spring Primary is February 21

A reminder that the Wisconsin Spring Primary is Tuesday, February 21st.  Polls are open from 7:00am to 8:00pm in most locations.  This Spring Primary will narrow down the candidates in many municipal elections prior to the April 3rd General Election.

Ashland City Council Considers Banning Prayer at Council Meetings

The Ashland City Council is favoring the passage of an ordinance to ban prayer at their Council Meetings and instead have “a moment of silence”.  When the Council gathered as a “Committee of the Whole” they voted 9-2 to ban the invocation and replace it with silence.  (Councilors Carl Doersch and Dick Pufall voted against the ban).

Originally scheduled to take this up as a City Council on January 31st, the vote has been delayed until their next Council Meeting on March 13th
